Cinco De Mayo – A Mexican Festival Fit for a Feast
There’s a good chance you’ve heard of Cinco de Mayo. But what is it all about?
If you’re familiar with Mexico, you’ll know Cinco de Mayo as one of the most important events in Mexican history. It is an annual day of commemoration, held on May 5th, which has spread beyond borders and is now celebrated in the United States and some other western countries.
So, when people celebrate Cinco de Mayo, what are they celebrating? Some mistakenly believe that it is the Mexico’s Independence Day, but that isn’t actually until September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo actually honours a very specific event in Mexican history – the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.
Now that we have the history lesson out of the way, let’s talk about the fun stuff!
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in true Mexican style – with parades, dancing, music and, most of all, food and beverages!
As already mentioned, this festive day has now travelled beyond its borders, and in the United States has become a date that observes the growth of Mexican-American culture – the fusion of cultures that has resulted from multi-culturalism in America.
