Mexican Christmas – Celebrate in Aztec Style!

As Christmas is fast approaching, it is time to begin preparation. A traditional Mexican Christmas involves a lot of celebration – and what is Christmas without food and drinks?

Spending Christmas day with family and friends is the best part of Christmas, and having food and drinks to celebrate with is a must. There are many traditional Mexican meals that you can all enjoy – and even make – together.

Mexican Christmas Dinner

Pozole is a soup or stew with pork and/or chicken that is made from hominy. It is seasoned with spices, garlic, onion and chilli, and is usually garnished with avocado, radishes and lime. It is a time-consuming dish to make, so is typically eaten on special occasions such as Christmas.

Tamales are another well-known Mexican food. Tamales are corn meal dumplings that are wrapped in a corn husk or banana leaf and can have a range of fillings. This meal is also a time-consuming task, and many family members help to make it– a perfect tradition for Christmas.

Enchiladas are a great dish to include on for any Mexican-themed day. For this meal, corn tortillas are wrapped with filling and covered in a savoury sauce. Common fillings for Enchiladas include meat, cheese, beans, potatoes, and vegetables.

Ponche Navideño is a traditional Mexican Christmas punch. It is made with water, sugar cane, cinnamon, and hibiscus flowers, with a mix of fruit such as tejocotes (apples), guavas and tamarind fruit. It can be served warm as either an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage. Ponche Navideño is enjoyed during Las Posadas, a nine-day celebration that begins on December 16th, and ends on December 24th.

A classic Mexican cocktail is the Paloma, a fresh and tasty cocktail that is made with grapefruit soda, lime juice and tequila.

Mexican Christmas Dessert

For dessert, a Tres Leches cake is a sweet option. Tres leches cake is a sponge or butter cake soaked in three different kinds of milk – evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream milk. It is topped with whipped cream and strawberries.
